2002-04-05 Response to Draft of 'Powering Future Vehicles'

This study was prompted by: 'Powering Future Vehicles. Draft Government Strategy' published by the DTLR/DTI/DEFRA/HM TREASURY in 2001. The main objective was to reduce the CO2 emissions of future passenger cars.

As an independent researcher and an automobile engineer, I drew on various 'well-to-wheel' studies available on the internet. The powertrains considered were Internal Combustion Engine-electric hybrids and (Hydrogen) Fuel Cell Vehicles. The resulting paper is: Response to Draft of 'Powering Future Vehicles'.

The document: 'Powering future vehicles strategy' of July 2002, was supposedly written in the light of all the responses.

This ignored the results I had found on 'well-to-wheel' efficiencies of petrol-electric hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. They acknowledged the merits of the former, which was hardly surprising as Toyota had started selling the Prius in the UK before the end of 2000 and I had bought one. But they hankered after the latter, despite the lack of - or any prospect of - any hydrogen fuel supply, let alone a carbon-neutral one.
