I and Dr Richard Pearson were invited to a meeting held by Air Fuel Synthesis. In connection with this, I produced a roundup of renewable fuel plants in Europe, finding seven, and synthetic renewable fuel activities in the USA, finding two.
It was prepared for David Benton, the R&D director of Air Fuel Synthesis. (See:
2012-10-19 Petrol from air: Will it make a difference? and:
2012-10-19 Exclusive: Pioneering scientists turn fresh air into petrol in massive boost in fight against energy crisis). I judge that their achievement was comparable to the very first, pre-pilot plant of ZSW Stuttgart, which they could read about. However, after spending UKP 9 million over 3 years, they received grant funding of only UKP 2.8 million. (See:
2014-09-16 Creating Liquid Fuel From The Air). So it hardly surprising that their web site has disappeared, suggesting that they have shut down. Most of the money for Air Fuel Synthesis came from Tony Marmont. Here is a profile of him in 1995:
1995-01-29 Tony Marmont The readiness of government, industry and the financial sector to fund such energy R&D differs hugely between the UK and the Continent, especially Germany. So Germany and other Continental countries go ahead, discover what has to be done, and then do it. Then the UK – in order belatedly to do the same – ends up buying from Germany and other Continental countries. In addition to renewable synthetic fuels plants, the same situation prevails in District Heating, with Denmark as the leading supplier of pre-insulated pipes, pumps and valves, and Wind Energy, with Denmark and Germany as leading suppliers of both on-shore and offshore wind turbines.
